Here is how this works in practice. Archive preservation in Peru sits at the intersection of today's production output and the country's heritage media infrastructure. Filmoteca PUCP — operated by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the country's de facto national film archive — alongside the Archivo General de la Nación, Biblioteca Nacional del Perú media collection, Ministerio de Cultura archives, and Instituto Nacional de Cultura heritage holdings, between them safeguard the visual record of Peruvian cinema going back to the early twentieth century.

Here is the short of it. For today's productions wrapping at Cinesphere DI Lima, Tondero Post, or Audiovisual Project Perú Post, we set up LTO-9 LTFS preservation packages running to 18TB native per tape, with geographically redundant copies stored on-site at the finishing site and at separate climate-controlled vaults to mitigate against single-location loss from seismic, flood, or fire risk.

Here is the breakdown. Each preservation package is built around an open-format philosophy — uncompressed or lightly compressed video masters in ProRes 4444 XQ or DNxHR, BWAV audio stems, sidecar XML metadata, and full project files for the colour grade, online conform, and sound mix — so the archive remains accessible even as proprietary tools and licences shift over the coming decades. Checksum verification runs at write time and on a scheduled re-validation cycle, with documented migration paths planned ahead of LTO format obsolescence so content transitions to the next generation before legacy drives become unavailable.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We can also catalogue and rebuild fragmented archives from earlier productions, applying MAM metadata schemas so DAFO-funded features, Festival de Lima entries, or commercial libraries can be searched, licensed, and re-issued through Movistar Play, Netflix Latin America, or global distribution without rebuilding from scratch.
